Nutrition 101

By Lindsay Gabbard, Registered Dietition at Rockcastle Regional

My name is Lindsay Gabbard, I am one of the Registered Dietitions here at Rockcastle Regional. All of us can relate to one another when it comes to food. After all, we all love to eat; but do you ever think about what you really putting into your body? It reminds me of a Clint Eastwood movie ... the good; whole grains, vitamins & minerals, that come from fruits, vegetables & lean meat; the bad: processed and sugary foods that are void any health benefits; the ugly: artery-clogging fat. You, and only you, can be in control of your body -- why not treat it good with what you eat, it's a good way to start.

There are so many opinions about what one should eat and if you are otherwise healthy you need to look no further than the food pyeramid for a basic guide. There, you will find a healthy eating plan, but it is up to you to stay within your daily calorie needs so you don't gain extra weight along the way. Check it out at www.mypyramid.gov and get a personalized meal plan when you enter your age, sex, weight, height and physical activity level.

When you balance your intake of foods with exercise, you can achieve a healthy weight. The food and exercise choices you make each day affect your health and how you feel today and int he future. Eating right and being physically active go hand in hand and are the keys to a healthy lifestyle. As always, the registered dietitions at Rockcastle Regional are available if you have questions about your diet or need a dietary consultant.
