Discharge Instructions for Hypernatremia

You have been diagnosed with hypernatremia (too much sodium in the blood). This can be caused by a high salt intake, but it is more commonly the result of fluid loss. Excessive fluid loss can occur if the kidneys excrete too much urine (called polyuria). Fluid loss can also be caused by excessive sweating during hot weather or exercise, by diarrhea or vomiting, or by not drinking enough water.

Hypernatremia can cause extreme thirst, fatigue, confusion, and low blood pressure. If not treated promptly, hypernatremia can result in loss of consciousness, seizures, and even death.

Diet Changes

Limit all foods that are high in sodium. In particular, avoid:

  • Canned soups

  • Frozen dinners

  • Commercially prepared tomato sauce and spaghetti sauce

  • Pizza

  • Potato and corn chips

  • Olives

  • Pickles

  • Soy sauce

  • Cottage cheese

  • Canned chili and stew

Other Home Care

  • Drink more fluids as directed by your doctor.

  • Have your sodium levels checked regularly. This is especially important if you are taking a diuretic (a medication that keeps you from retaining body water).

  • Ask your doctor for instructions about fluid replacement in case you have vomiting or diarrhea.

  • Tell your doctor about all prescription and over-the-counter medications you are taking. Some medications can increase sodium levels.

  • Take all medications exactly as directed.

  • Keep all follow-up appointments. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition closely, especially if you have another medical condition that is causing your hypernatremia.

Follow-Up

Make a follow-up appointment as directed by our staff.

  • Muscle twitching, spasms, or cramps
