Sticking to it

Laboratory Director in 39th year of service to Rockcastle Regional

by Arielle Reese, Rockcastle Regional Community Relations Director
Rockcaslte Regional CEO

Larry Bullock was 21 years old when he started at then-named Rockcastle County Baptist Hospital. The name of the hospital has changed, but not Larry's passion for taking care of patients.

"This place has changed a lot since I've been here," Larry said. "The lab had one room, probably no bigger than 12 x 16, when I started working here in August of 1971. There were two of us working in the Lab." Now, with a staff of 15 people and lab services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, it is amazing how time changes things.

Larry said that one of the biggest changes has been in technology. Procedures that used to take hours for results now take minutes. Over the years the volume of blood tests that are available for patients have steadily increased and new developments happen everyday. Sometimes people can't believe he has worked in the same place for so many years. Larry said he sometimes has a hard time figuring out how he chose this career because, "Blood used to make me sick. I guess it was my fondness for chemistry and biology."

Larry is a native of Rockcastle County and says even though he's seen other hospitals, none impress him like Rockcastle Regional. "Over the years I've refused job offers for more money because I wanted to keep working here," Larry said. "I enjoy the patients that we deal with. I know most of them and it makes me feel good to take care of people I know."
