Rockcastle Regional Receives Quality Award for fourth year

Rockcastle Regional Hospital & Respiratory Care Center has received the 2010 Kentucky Hospital Association (KHA) Quality Award for hospitals with less than 100 beds. Rockcastle Regional won the prestigious award in 2006, 2008 and 2009.

The Quality Award was created to honor hospital leadership and innovation in quality, safety and commitment to patient care. The goals of this award include: raising awareness of the need for an organization-wide commitment to highly reliable, exceptional quality, patient-centered care; rewarding successful efforts to develop and promote a systems-based approach toward improvements in quality of care; inspiring organizations to systematically integrate and align their quality improvement efforts throughout the organization; communicating successful programs and strategies to the hospital field; and facilitating Kentucky hospitals' alignment of quality initiatives with national initiatives.

The project that won the Quality Award focused on the safety at Rockcastle Regional on nights and weekends. Using the Safety on Nights and Weekends (S.W.A.N.) Tool, Rockcastle Regional considered: leadership and organizational structure, services available on nights and weekends, staff issues on nights and weekends, physician availability on nights and weekends, communications, technology, data analysis and services for patients and families.

Rockcastle Regional was also the recipient of the KHA Circle of Friends Clarence C. Traum Award. This award is in honor of outstanding support of KHA's legislative and regulatory efforts to enhance patient care.

"Quality and patient safety is our top priority at Rockcastle Regional and it is inspiring for us to be recognized for our efforts," said Tammy Brock, RN, Director of the Quality Department. "Embedded in the mission of Rockcastle Regional is the desire to provide service excellence experiences that are of quality. It is our belief that a patient of Rockcastle Regional should be confident they're receiving the same level of care - whether it's 10 a.m. or 10 p.m."

The S.W.A.N. tool allowed Rockcastle Regional to implement process change to enhance the safety and efficacy of care on nights and weekends and measure the progress.

"It is particularly gratifying to win this award. It illustrates that Rockcastle Regional is committed to creating and supporting a culture that focuses on excellence in delivery of service and an absolute obsession with patient safety and customer satisfaction," said Stephen Estes, Rockcastle Regional President and CEO. "We are a team of dedicated and involved individuals and receiving the KHA Quality Award for a fourth time and the Traum award for a fifth time is validation of the continuous performance improvements efforts of the entire organization, and in particular the great work and leadership of our quality department."
