Respiratory Therapist

Respiratory therapists at Rockcastle Regional Hospital are important members of the respiratory health care team. They work under the medical direction of doctors to treat all types of patients, ranging from premature infants whose lungs are not fully developed to elderly people with lung disease. They provide temporary relief to patients with chronic asthma or emphysema, as well as emergency care to patients who are experiencing respiratory problems.

Some illnesses make breathing more difficult and the patient may need a ventilator or respiratory therapy to help the patient breathe easier. For many patients, each breath is an effort, often causing anxiety, which results in further shortness of breath, increased heart rate, muscle tension and even feelings of panic. This can negatively impact all aspects of life. Our goal is to help each patient regain independence by breathing without assistive devices.

A large percentage of patients hospitalized at Rockcastle Regional Hospital require some form of respiratory therapy. Rockcastle’s Respiratory Center is staffed by respiratory therapists who provide round-the-clock coverage. They care for patients who have impaired lung function under the direction of our board-certified pulmonologists and our medical directors. The department operates and maintains highly sophisticated equipment to administer oxygen, uses mechanical ventilation for patients who can’t breathe on their own and monitors and manages therapy to help patients recover lung function. Respiratory therapists at Rockcastle Regional Hospital are vital members of our respiratory health care team. Our therapists work with patients at all levels of care and all ages, from premature infants to geriatric patients.
