On Saturday, November 8, Rockcastle Regional is offering a special weekend scheduling option for Low Dose CT (LDCT) lung screenings, an important tool in the early detection of lung cancer. This initiative provides a convenient opportunity for individuals to access a potentially life-saving screening on a day that might be easier for those with busy weekday schedules.

The Importance of Lung Cancer Screening

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, and Kentucky holds the highest rates of lung cancer in the nation. This issue is especially critical in rural areas of Kentucky, where smoking prevalence is higher and access to healthcare can be limited. Early detection through LDCT screening has been shown to reduce lung cancer mortality by detecting cancer at an earlier, more treatable stage.

Eligibility for Low Dose CT Screening

Not everyone is eligible for LDCT screening, as it is specifically targeted at high-risk individuals. To qualify for the screening, you must be able to answer “yes” to each of the following questions:

  • Are you between 50 and 80 years old?
  • Do you currently smoke or have you quit within the last 15 years?
  • Do you have a smoking history of at least 20 pack-years (equivalent to smoking one pack a day for 20 years or two packs a day for 10 years)?

If you meet these criteria, LDCT screening could be the next recommended step in a proactive approach to monitoring your lung health.

How to Prepare for Your Screening

Before your LDCT screening, there are a few steps you should take to prepare:

  1. Counseling for Smoking Cessation: If you currently smoke, consider receiving counseling to quit. Quitting smoking can significantly improve your overall health and reduce your risk of developing lung cancer.
  2. Consult Your Primary Care Provider: Discuss the benefits and limitations of LDCT screening with your primary care provider. They can provide valuable information about what to expect from the screening and how it fits into your overall health plan.
  3. Check Insurance Requirements: Contact your insurance provider to see if a referral is required for LDCT screening. This will help ensure that the screening is covered and prevent any unexpected costs.

To take advantage of the weekend scheduling on Saturday, November 8, please call 606-256-7381 to book your appointment. Appointments are available from 9:00 am until 12:00 pm. If you prefer to schedule your LDCT scan on a different day, you can call 606-256-7878 for assistance.
