Introducing Dr. Mary Saylor Joenborg

Rockcastle Regional is pleased to welcome Dr. Mary Saylor Joeborg to our physician team at Rockcastle Family Wellness and Brodhead Family Care as a family medicine provider.

Dr. Joenborg earned her medical degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 2017 and completed her residency at the University of Kentucky in 2020 where she also served as chief resident.

"My main focus when I walk into the room with a patient is to get to know them as a person, not just a patient," said Dr. Joenborg. "This gives me a lot of insight into their life and I can find out what they enjoy doing and what their struggles are. It helps guide me in what kind of treatments they would respond best to and what they would be most comfortable trying. Knowing the medicine is really important, but knowing the patient takes care to the next level."

In addition to general family practice, Dr. Joenborg has a true passion for women's health. "For many women, the inconvenience of having to travel to a gynecologist's office oftentimes becomes a barrier to them receiving their annual preventive screenings and exams, and that is a very risky thing to do. Many women are unaware their family doctor can actually perform their annual women's health exams. During my residency, I developed an interest in women's health and helping my female patients manage this side of their care. By providing this service, I can help reduce one more barrier to women receiving this important care."

A native of Rockcastle County and daughter to Boone and Dr. Karen Saylor, Dr. Joenborg is a familiar face in this community. "Growing up, my mother was my hero. I saw her interactions with people from this community and the relationships she formed with them. I thought that was the most awesome thing a person could do. Throughout my medical training, and particularly during my residency, I was able to really develop relationships with my patients and that's when I knew family medicine was my calling."
